About Anion Gap

The Anion Gap calculates the difference between measured positive and negative ions in your blood, detecting unmeasured acids. It is a critical tool for diagnosing metabolic acidosis from diabetic ketoacidosis, lactic acidosis, kidney failure, or toxic ingestions. The anion gap must always be corrected for albumin to avoid missing a true high-gap acidosis.

What does your Anion Gap result mean?

A high anion gap means unmeasured acids are accumulating from diabetic ketoacidosis, lactic acidosis, kidney failure, or toxic ingestions. A low anion gap is rare.

Optimal vs. normal range

Standard range is 8-12 mmol/L. The anion gap must be corrected for albumin.
